Bible Chapter: Amos 1 & 2
Because the Bible is practical, here are some statements to get you thinking.
1. Write one or two key thoughts that come from today’s reading.Several times we read: This is what the Lord says. Then it is followed by what God was speaking to specific people groups. God’s message to the people included “The people of _______ have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished!” These people had rejected the instructions of the Lord and refused to obey. These are some straightforward messages that let us know what God thinks of obedience and punishment. We see the heart of many sinners in the passage that says they caused the Nazirites to sin by making them drink wine. The Nazirites had made a commitment before God to not drink alcoholic drinks. It is common for people who do whatever they want to try to draw others into doing what they are doing. They are not satisfied to allow people to live their convictions. These same people told the prophets to be quiet, for they didn’t like what they were hearing. Amos was a godly man who was called to deliver a message of judgment to Israel to give them a final warning. The sinners didn’t want to hear it.
The majority of the sins of these seven nations listed are acts of cold-hearted cruelty. God hates it when people abuse others. He will severely punish cruelty or a lack of compassion. So many knew better, but their selfishness caused them to be mean to others.
2. What can I apply in my life from the reading?
The Israelites enjoyed the privilege of God’s covenant with them. Today, millions of believers in Jesus have been blessed by God’s power and presence in their lives. When people say they will follow the Lord, He expects obedience and faithfulness. Sadly, many have turned back on their commitment to God and forgotten all that He has done. It is too easy to fall prey to the tempter and get short-sighted. Many forget about eternity. We must never forget the love God has shown to us through the sacrifice of Jesus. Remember God’s blessings, always be grateful and faithful.
The option for those who are not faithful is to eventually be crushed by judgement. God judges un-repented sin. Some people think they are strong and don’t need God. There will come a day when they find out that is not true.
3. How can I help someone?
Learn the blessing of faithfulness to God. Notice how often Amos wrote “This is what the Lord says . . .” God speaks His truth and it must be followed.
